What kind of screen do you use for a fireplace?
Wire mesh that has an opening size of approximately 1/10″ and a 60% open area is the most commonly used in fireplace screens. The combination of a clear opening and a standard diameter wire provides the ideal combination of heat protection, visibility, and spark retention.
Do fireplace screens block heat?

Do you need a screen over a fireplace?
You must always put a fire screen in front of the fire if you have a stone floor or a large stone or metal surface before the fire. Using a fireplace screen for a gas fire is also a good idea.
Is glass or screen better for fireplace?
It is safer to use a glass fireplace door rather than an open hearth to burn logs. Because they are thicker and stronger than mesh screens, they serve as a fire barrier, keeping embers and sparks from escaping the fireplace and igniting combustibles like carpets and furniture.
